Meeting Point Counseling

Bio: Michael A. Miller

Since I've had several stages to my career, of which counseling is the latest, I'll provide the following brief summary of my experience.

I am independently licensed as a professional counselor in the state of Ohio where I see clients in person, in Cleveland Heights and Mentor, and via telehealth as a contractor at Mindfulness Counseling, LLC. I have experience and training in trauma, addictions, working with survivors of sexual abuse, including male-identifying survivors, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), EMDR, solution-focused therapy, career counseling, and with in-person and telehealth counseling. I am trained in EMDR with EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) approved training through The Institute for Creative Mindfulness.

I've worked in a number of counseling environments. I facilitated online groups for male survivors of sexual abuse as a volunteer with the The Connect Study in 2019 to 2021, a research program of the Yale University Department of Psychiatry to develop online groups for sexual and gender minority male survivors of sexual abuse. In 2020, I provided group and individual counseling as an intern at Moore Counseling, an outpatient behavioral health and addictions center in Euclid, Ohio. In 2020-2021 I was in the crisis and Care Management Internship Training Program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where I provided individual and group therapy to a diverse collection of clients throughout the lifespan from the undergraduate and graduate schools, including schools of science, engineering, art, music, medicine, dentistry, and law. From 2021-2023 I worked in integrated care at Crossroads Health as an outpatient mental health counselor/therapist. Since 2023 I've provided contracted outpatient mental health counseling through Mindfulness Counseling, LLC, in Cleveland Heights and Mentor, Ohio.

My experience in varied environments prior to pivoting to counseling provides me with first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities people encounter in many stages of life. One of my strengths is being able assimilate information from diverse fields and translate among various subspecialty “dialects,” something that serves me well as I connect with and support clients from all walks of life. I'm proud to call myself a highly tech-literate counselor as my career has included a great deal of technical work, including software, electronics, data acquisition, high-performance computing, and data analysis.

In addition to an MA in clinical mental health counseling, my education includes a BA from a liberal arts college and a PhD in physics. Prior to entering the counseling world, I worked with individuals and groups from many cultures and countries from around the world. I've done research and development work in medical imaging with a large multinational company with sites across the globe. That role was mainly at the systems level with hardware and software engineering, marketing and sales support, and regulatory support. Prior to working in the medical device industry, I did research and taught in physics, radiology, imaging sciences, and cardiology at labs and universities on multiple continents.

I have been involved in professional organizations and outreach throughout my career. I am a current member of the American Counseling Association, the Ohio Counseling Association, the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (emeritus). I'm a past member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and American Physical Society. In the medical imaging phase of my career, I was active with the Medical Imaging Technology Alliance where I chaired the task force that wrote the NEMA NU 2-2018 standard for PET and PET/CT systems. I was also a member of the NEMA NU 2-2013 and NU 1-2013 task forces.

I am author or co-author of more than 60 journal articles, have presented at 50+ scientific conferences, co-authored chapters in medical texts, edited conference proceedings, and co-authored several patents. Most recently I edited and expanded Lars Herman Beck's historical memoirs about his immigration from Sweden in 1869 and life in the US through the 1920s. A detailed CV is available on request.
